He is wearing a dark suit with a dark tie and a white shirt. His dark hair is combed back on his head. The chair on which he is sitting is resting on a patterned quilt on the ground. On January 24, 1848, Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill, Coloma village in El Dorado County, California.
