A SEARCH FOR THE GROUP ENVIRONMENTS OF LOW-POWER FRII RADIO GALAXIES

Although a good deal of indirect evidence points towards moderate or poor groupsas the environment of lowluminosity (and therefore typical) FRII radiogalaxies, there are almost no direct Xray observations of the required hot,confining medium. An FRII radio source would have a dramatic effect on the gasin a group, heating and potentially expelling a significant fraction of it, withimportant consequences for our understanding of group evolution. In order tocharacterize the Xray environments of typical FRII sources, we propose a smallsurvey of the nearest few FRII sources of intermediate size drawn from thewellstudied 3CRR catalogue.
