Ambrosia beetles and fungi form one of the most powerful and widespread symbioses on Earth today. Some ambrosia fungi are deadly tree pathogens, while thousands of others form harmless, and diverse, relationships with beetles. The goal of this study is to determine which fungi are associated with the fourteen independent origins of fungus farming ambrosia beetles. Results from this study will be used to predict which beetles are carrying deadly tree pathogens. These data will also be used to create models that explain how the symbiosis evolved, to support or refute evolutionary theories.
蜜食甲虫与真菌构成了地球上现今最具影响力和分布范围最广的共生关系之一。部分蜜食真菌是致命的树木病原体,而数千种其他真菌则与甲虫形成了无害且多样化的共生关系。本研究的目的是确定哪些真菌与十四种独立的真菌养殖蜜食甲虫起源相关联。本研究的结果将被用于预测携带致命树木病原体的甲虫种类。这些数据还将被用于构建解释共生关系演化的模型,以支持或反驳进化理论。
