This paper demonstrates that the Canadian Hansard is a valuable source for analyzing political narratives on environmental issues through the Narrative Policy Framework (NPF). Our research supports the core principles of the NPF and advances a complementary methodological approach through a Canadian case study.Our findings indicate that MPs’ narratives on environmental issues generally align with official governmental publications and party policy frameworks, reflecting the NPF’s primacy of groups, networks, and narrative cognition postulates. The analysis also reveals partisan differences in the language used during debates, with effects ranging from small to large. In addition, Steven Guilbeault’s appointment as Minister of Environment and Climate Change appears to have tightened Conservative narratives around economic themes, encouraging competing parties to adopt a more economically oriented discourse. Overall, the study underscores the value of continual Hansard analysis and reaffirms the NPF’s applicability in Canadian policy studies.
