In 1867, China sent its first embassy—the Burlingame mission—to America and Europe to promote China’s relations with the West. In Burlingame’s letter of credence addressed by Emperor Daoguang to the Queen of England and Other Western Countries (1868), the emperor appointed Burlingame as ambassador and requested the addressee to accord him credence. The letter was translated by J. M. L. Browny, the first secretary of the Chinese mission (Gumpach, J. von.,1872, p. 67; Y. Li, 2012, p. 371).
