Large methane release from abandoned hydrocarbon wells in Italy (Met_AHW-IT)

The MET_AHW-IT dataset contains structured and site-specific information on methane emissions from abandoned hydrocarbon wells (AHW) in Italy. Each record includes attributes describing well identity (name and geographic setting), drilling period, abandonment status (plugged/unplugged), and resource type (gas, oil, or mixed oil–gas). The primary quantitative data consist of methane emission rates expressed as annual, daily and hourly mass fluxes (t CH₄ yr⁻¹; kg CH₄ d⁻¹), covering a wide dynamic range from non-detectable emissions to very high emitters. A subset of the sampled wells are listed in the AHW-IT_Procesi et al. (2026) dataset, which compiles an inventory of abandoned hydrocarbon wells in Italy. This inventory has been developed based on the ViDEPI dataset, applying selection criteria defined by the authors.
