Neuronal counts of the Anterior Piriform Cortex in 6 mammals

This repository contains Neurolucida files showing the density counts for 6 species of mammals (across 12 animals). The data set can also be used for estimating the volumes and surface areas of anterior piriform cortex, as a well as an analysis of neuron density counts.

The data shows that as piriform cortex size increases, the surface area density, i.e., the number of neurons underneath 1 square mm of piriform cortex, decreases. Additionally, the number of synapses made by each neuron with axons from the olfactory bulb increases. These 2 results have two consequences as described in the attached reference paper of this dataset. 1. The number of piriform neurons and bulb glomeruli are related by the relationship n ~ g^(3/2). 2. The average number of synapses between each glomerulus and piriform neuron is invariant at 1.
