Twenty-eight pregnant Merino ewes were used to study the effect of including 4 g/kg of betaine in a complete pelleted ration on feed intake and animal performance of both, dams (F0) and female offspring (F1), including the first lactation period. To this end, fourteen ewes (F0-CTL group) received a complete pelleted ration (control diet) ad libitum during the last two months of gestation. The remaining animals (F0-BET group; n = 14) received the same diet, but with the addition of 4 g/kg of betaine. The results of the present study revealed that betaine supplementation during the gestation period of Merino ewes caused differentially methylated regions (DMRs) in the female offspring that were assessed at 53,649 and 2164 sites using MethylKit (q value < 0.05) and CGmap Tools (FDR < 0.05), respectively.
