Investigation of the nature of the magnetic ground state and complex spin dynamics in a Kagome system, single-crystal GdMn6Sn6

GdMn6Sn6, a kagome-lattice compound with hexagonal HfFe6Ge6-type structure, offers a fertile ground to study complex magnetism arising from competing intra and interlayer exchange interactions between Gd and Mn sublattices. Neutron diffraction reveals a collinear ferrimagnetic order near 441 K, yet several aspects of its low-temperature behavior remain unresolved. Its structural analog TbMn6Sn6 shows rich spin dynamics and multiple magnetic transitions below its Curie point, raising the possibility of similar hidden phases in GdMn6Sn6. The large magnetic moment and negligible anisotropy of Gd further enhance the likelihood of exotic ground states driven by frustrated interactions. To address this, we propose muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements to probe the magnetic ground state and spin dynamics. Zero-field muSR will enable the detection of transitions, fluctuation rates, and unconventional phases, thereby advancing understanding of kagome magnetism in layered materials. Previously, we submitted a regular direct access proposal (RB2520335) on this sample, and the reviewers suggested conducting XPRESS measurements, motivating the present proposal.
