Abnormal leaf fall disease caused by Phytophthora spp. is one ofthe major diseases responsible for significant yield loss in rubber trees (Heveabrasiliensis). Next-generation sequencing based transcriptomic study of two rubberclones: RRIM 600 (susceptible) and FX 516 (tolerant) were performed to understand the molecular basis of host tolerance to fungal diseases. Transcriptomic response of clones showing differential response to Phytophthora infection at early hours, mid hours and late hours of infection were studied. The newly identified differentially regulated genes and sequence variation provide critical knowledge for understanding the genetic basis of disease resistance and for marker development. This aids in developing an efficient crop breeding strategy in a perennial tree crop.
