Ferdinand Tönnies (*1855 in Oldenswort; † 1936 in Kiel) was a German sociologist, economist and philosopher. He is considered the “father of sociology” in Germany. His estate is one of the most important and extensive that the Landesbibliothek has to offer. As a widely networked “cosmopolite”, Tönnies maintained contacts with internationally renowned scientists, e.g. Albert Einstein or Bertrand Russell. The handwritten notebooks of the sociologist are a special biographical characteristic of the estate. In 168 volumes, they rarely document the life and work of one of the most important thinkers of his time. They contain valuable socio-scientific and philosophical material, such as drafts on work manuscripts, empirical studies, content indications of books read, as well as comments about scientists with whom he was in contact. His notebooks were his “permanent companions.” They also give a deep insight into the researcher’s everyday culture with their shredded covers, numerous deletions, notepads and business cards — and span an extensive panorama from the Empire to the beginning of National Socialism. In a third-party funding project, Tönnies’ notebooks are currently fully digitised and accessed. Since they have not yet been published, they contain diverse and completely unknown material about Tönnies and his time. The image files are available in PDF format, the metadata in the corresponding Excel tables. The Excel tables “decrypt” the digitised notebooks according to basic data, provide content references and (partial) transcriptions and bring to light previously unpublished material. An overview of the provided notebooks can be found at the address: https://opendatarepo.lsh.uni-kiel.de/data/landesbibliothek/toennies/ToenniesUebersicht.csv
