The Slovenian public’s views on the police

In Slovenia, European relations of support for parliamentary democracy are generally confirmed, i.e. the proportions of the population who trust or do not trust the institutions of parliamentary democracies. However, as studies in a comparable context of European countries show, Slovenia is still lagging behind traditional European democracies in terms of the degree of confidence expressed in the institutions of the democratic system. Trust in institutions whose assessments are not purely situational depends largely on the situation in the context of the political culture and traditions of the country. In particular, support for the legal system and the repressive institutions coincide with the state of political culture. After trusting in these institutions, Slovenia is closer to the new democracies of post-transitional societies. In doing so, we note that the lowest level of common trust is generally found in the countries where the problems are greatest. In recent years, Slovenia also deviates significantly from the “transitional pattern” in view of its political and economic characteristics and, after having confidence in the key institutions of the democratic system, is approaching established democracies.
