This study investigated the effects of the administration of paraprobiotics obtained by six distinct technological processes: heat, ultrasound, high pH, low pH, irradiation and supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) during 15 days on biochemical parameters and intestinal microbiota of Wistar male rats. Results show that the inactivation method impacts the functional properties of the derived paraprobiotics but, in general, did not compromise the functionality related to the studied parameters when compared to live cells. Results highlight the distinct effects of paraprobiotics obtained by different inactivation methods on biochemical parameters of healthy rats and the lack of major changes in the intestinal microbiota effects. Irradiation could be suggested as a promising method to obtain paraprobiotics with lowering-cholesterol effects. Results of this may help identify new possibilities for clinical trials to explore the distinguish functionality of paraprobiotics cells.
