Men who have sex with men (MSM) account for more than half of all new HIV infections in the United States. However, the host-virus interaction in rectal mucosa during early rectal transmission of HIV-1 is poorly understood. Rhesus macaques/Simian immune deficiency virus (SIV) is the best available model of human rectal transmission of HIV-1. To gain better insights into the early molecular events of HIV-1 rectal transmission, we did genome-wide mRNA transcription analysis in rectal mucosal tissues at very early stage of SIV rectal inoculation using next-generation RNA-seq.
