Ocean Drilling Program - Leg 178: drilling campaign in the continental margin of the Antarctic Peninsula

The Leg 178 Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) was developed from 5th February to 9th
April in 1998. During the 31 days of campaign 9 locations were drilled in the
continental margin of the Antarctic Peninsula to establish the evolution of the
Antarctic Glacial ice layer, registered by the sediments.

The Spanish participation in the campaign were as
Sedimentologist-Stratigraphist, taking part of the team responsible to
establish the lithostratigraphy, sedimentary petrology and depositional
processes.

A total of 500 samples were taken from the drills to do detailed mineralogical
and petrological studies at the laboratory. The Leg 178 results are in press
in the volume "Initial Report" of ODP.

El Leg 178 del Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) ha tenido lugar entre el 5 de
febrero de 1998 y el 9 de abril de 1998. Durante los 31 dias de campana se
perforaron 9 localidades en el margen continental de la Peninsula Antartica,
con el objetivo de establecer la evolucion de la capa de Hielo Glacial
Antartico, registrada por los sedimentos.

La participacion espanola en la campana fue en calidad de
Sedimentologo-Estratigrafo, formando parte del equipo responsable del
establecimiento de la litoestratigrafia, petrologia sedimentaria y procesos
deposicionales.

Se realizo una toma de muestras correspondiente a todos los sondeos con un
total de 500 muestras, para realizar estudios mineralogicos y petrologicos
detallados en el laboratorio. Los resultados del Leg 178 se encuentran en
prensa en el volumen de los "Initial Reports" del ODP.
