作为一种习俗，对联是汉族传统文化的重要组成部分。对联俗称“春贴”、“门对”、“春联”、“楹联”，来源于古代的桃符，是中国一种独特的文学形式。它以工整、对偶、简洁、精巧的文字描绘时代背景，抒发人们的美好愿望，是中国长期延续下来的民族风俗文化。2005年，中国国务院把楹联习俗列为第一批国家非物质文化遗产名录。  对联应用范围广泛，包括春联、行业联、婚联、寿联、挽联、广告联、胜迹联、庆典联、居室联等方面，其中春联是对联中应用比较广泛的一个品种。“千门万户曈曈日，总把新桃换旧符”（宋 王安石《元日》）。一首诗，生动地记载了北宋年间，春节最重要的习俗之一：贴春联。中国民间讲究有神必贴，每门必贴，每物必贴。每逢春节期间，无论城市还是农村，家家户户都要精选一副大红春联贴于门上，辞旧迎新，以增加节日的喜庆气氛。

As a traditional custom, Chinese couplets are an important component of Han Chinese traditional culture. Commonly known as "chun tie" (spring pastes), "men dui" (door pairs), "chun lian" (Spring Festival couplets), and "ying lian" (pillar couplets), this unique literary form originating from ancient peach wood talismans depicts the era's backdrop with well-structured, antithetical, concise and exquisite wording, expressing people's good wishes and serving as a long-standing folk cultural heritage of China. In 2005, the State Council of China included the custom of pillar couplets in the first batch of the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Chinese couplets have a wide range of applications, including Spring Festival couplets, trade-specific couplets, wedding couplets, birthday couplets, mourning couplets, advertising couplets, scenic spot couplets, celebration couplets, and household couplets, among which Spring Festival couplets are the most widely used variety. The line "The sun shines brightly on thousands of households; they always replace old peach talismans with new ones" (from Wang Anshi's *Yuan Ri [New Year's Day]*, Song Dynasty) vividly records one of the most important Spring Festival customs during the Northern Song Dynasty: pasting Spring Festival couplets. In Chinese folk culture, it is customary to paste couplets wherever deities are enshrined, on every door, and on every relevant object. During the Spring Festival, whether in cities or rural areas, every household will select a pair of red Spring Festival couplets to post on their doors, bidding farewell to the old year and welcoming the new one, to enhance the festive atmosphere of the holiday.
