Winding the Spiral: XMM Observations of the Spiral Planetary Nebula

The Spiral Planetary Nebula (NGC 5189), exhibits spectacular pointsymmetricmorphology indicative of a number of collimated outflows. The WO1 central starhas lost its hydrogenrich envelope, possibly through a late thermal pulse orbinary interaction. The recent discovery of a compact companion to the WO1central star in 4 day orbit connects the morphological properties of the nebulawith powerful binary interactions, potentially as a result of postcommonenvelope binary evolution. Several processes may be responsible for Xrayemission originating from NGC 5189, including a hot bubble, wind shocks, andcompanion activity.
