资源简介:
This dataset presents the results of a standard set of laboratory tests performed on an unselected population of children (<15 years old) who were admitted to Kilifi County Hospital in rural Kenya between January 2002 and September 2009. The KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme has operated routine surveillance in this hospital since 1989, ensuring all children are assessed by a clinician and their data is directly entered into a computarised database. The dataset consists of one .csv file. There are 31 columns for 31 measured parameters, including: - sex - hb: haemoglobin measurement - age_months: age at time of admission - died: survival status at time of discharge - mal_par: malarial parasites detected by a blood film - transfusion_status: receipt of whole blood transfusion during admission- hiv_cat: HIV statusalong with a range of other demographic and clinical symptom variables. Some of the raw data has also been adapted/edited to protect patient identities.
The associated study investigated whether survival among children admitted to hospital in rural Africa varied by admission haemoglobin status. It also investigated whether malaria infection and/or blood transfusion influenced the pattern of risk by haemoglobin status. The study aimed to address aspects of the challenge of providing adequate supplies of donor blood for paediatric transfusion in sub-Saharan Africa.
