Trade unions in France and the former French colonies (1884-1977)

This historical dataset covers trade unions created between 1884 and 1977 in metropolitan France, in the overseas territories and departments, as well as in the former colonies (Algeria and Madagascar). The creation of trade unions is permitted by the promulgation of the [Waldeck-Rousseau Act of 21 March 1884](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loi_du_21 _mars_1884_relative_%C3%A0_la_cr%C3%A9ation_des_syndicats_professionnels). Trade union files kept in the National Archives are a valuable source for the study of trade unionism in France. They cover a period from the end of the 19th century to the second half of the 20th century, with a high concentration of documents produced in particular during the Second World War. These archives make it possible to understand both the geographical location of trade unions, their diversity (workers, employers, farmers, etc.) and their evolution over time. This dataset was compiled from the entry of serial control files of the trade unions set up by the Ministry of Labour. It represents 464 archive boxes. 28,408 union entries were seized. Several entries on the files (on the file cover or the union data sheet) have been included in the dataset: * The union number (not present in the files). The same syndicate may have more than one number, in which case the lines have not been merged; * The type of attachment to unions (employer, worker, agricultural worker, civil servant, mixed …); * The region (according to the current nomenclature); * The department (for Algeria: Algiers, Oran and Constantine, for Madagascar, only "Madagascar"); * The municipality; * The name of the trade union; * The year of creation; * The year of declaration in the prefecture. As not all this information is systematically filled in for each file, some entries are therefore incomplete and are called ‘uninformed’. The following has been added: * The name of the current municipality (related to mergers or name changes); * The INSEE code of the current municipality; * Latitude and longitude; * The occupational sector(s) of each trade union (following the name of the occupational nomenclatures used by the Official Journal of 7 May 1936); * The trade union file can be consulted in the reading room at the National Archives; * The link to the National Archives' documentary portal.
