PtSn(N2Cl3)2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic Cmce space group. The structure is one-dimensional and consists of four PtSn(N2Cl3)2 ribbons oriented in the (1, 0, 0) direction. Pt6+ is bonded in a square co-planar geometry to four equivalent N1- atoms. All Pt–N bond lengths are 1.95 Å. Sn4+ is bonded in an octahedral geometry to six Cl1- atoms. There are two shorter (2.46 Å) and four longer (2.80 Å) Sn–Cl bond lengths. N1- is bonded in a bent 120 degrees geometry to one Pt6+ and one Cl1- atom. The N–Cl bond length is 1.69 Å. There are two inequivalent Cl1- sites. In the first Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one Sn4+ atom. In the second Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a bent 120 degrees geometry to one Sn4+ and one N1- atom.
