The ability to take care of one's own health is the need of the hour as the expenditure on health-related needs seems to be on the rise. This will not only prevent the inconvenience of becoming ill, but it will reduce the economic burden of the subject. Thus, self-monitoring devices such as pulse oximeter, electronic blood pressure apparatus have helped people in this direction. We, through this study aimed something similar by creating an application which would use a smartphone in detecting pulse rate. There are already portable devices in the market such as pulse oximeters which do a reasonably good job. But, as they are not carried wherever people go, the smartphone became our choice of device to solve the problem of portability. Also, when situation arises if medical personnel need to look at the readings remotely, smartphone application will provide the necessary convenience of sharing the data. We found that our application estimated the pulse rate with reasonable accuracy compared to the values from standard pulse oximeters.<br>
