TikTok was launched back in September 2017, at which time it was used by 1.8 percent of smartphone users in the United Kingdom (UK). Since then, the video-sharing social media app has really taken off, especially with the younger demographic, and in particular with “Generation Z”. As of December 2019, 8.7 percent of the UK's smartphone population was using TikTok.Social media and children Although used by as much as 13 percent of children, TikTok isn’t yet as popular as other big-name social media sites and apps like Facebook and Snapchat. Times may be changing however, with over a third of Facebook users having considered leaving the social network in 2019. Video content in the UK Video content has become more popular than ever as internet speeds and uploaded/downloaded data in the UK have increased. Whether it’s video on-demand platforms like Netflix, or video-sharing social media like TikTok, there’s no denying the success that video is seeing on all types of devices.
