These data relate to an investigation into the contractile efficiency of the circular muscles of the European common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), which power jet propulsion swimming. The maximum contractile efficiency occurs at the same frequency at which the muscles generate maximum power output, which is the frequency used during jet propulsion swimming. The overall efficiency of jet propulsion swimming is comparable to other modes of locomotion.
