For this study, we designed three parallel laboratory-scale trickling biofilter setups to mimic the sand filtration system for the enrichment of novel nitrifying microorganisms. This allowed us to obtain the first enrichment of clade B comammox Nitrospira as well as other nitrifying bacteria from WB, P-RSF, and S-RSF samples.
