Tuscany Region – Wetlands of International Importance (RAMSAR)

The Tuscany Region counts on its territory 11 wetlands of international importance, recognised under the Ramsar Convention (established in Ramsar in 1971 and ratified by Italy by Presidential Decree No 488 of 13 March 1976) was one of the first international agreements aimed at the preservation of wildlife and precisely of a kind of ecosystems little known and traditionally not protected in state legislation; the convention, to date signed by more than 150 countries and with over 900 wetlands identified in the world, it is still the only modern international treaty for the protection of wetlands.)The process of recognition of 7 Tuscan areas provided for a Regional Executive Decision No 231 of 15 March 2004 (http://www301.regione.toscana.it/bancadati/atti/DettaglioAttiG.xml?codprat=2004DG00000000336), in which they were proposed as Ramsar wetlands and a Regional Junta Resolution No 739 of 9 September 2013 in which the Tuscany Region expressed a favourable opinion on the schemes of ministerial decree to make definitive the recognition as wetlands of international importance of the proposed areas (the Ramsar zones are recognised of international importance not only for the purposes of regulating the waters but above all as habitats of flora and fauna characteristics, the areas “Padule della Trappola – Foce dell’Ombrone” and “Lake and Swamp of Massaciuccoli” during 2017 were definitively designated as Ramsar Zones by the General Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention, including them with Nos 2284 and 2311 respectively in the list of wetlands of international importance pursuant to Article 21 of the Convention.From the following links it is possible to download the RIS form (Ramsar Information Sheet) of each of these areas:--- Trap Pads – Foce of the Ombrone Lake and marsh of Massaciuccoli ≈ more information see also
