Investigating human milk as a lipid-based formulation for the delivery of poorly water-soluble drugs in paediatric populations

Most medications are designed to meet the needs of adult patients, making their application in infant patients complicated or unsafe. Many drugs are also poorly soluble in our gut which can limit their effectiveness. Milk is a readily available material that is well tolerated by infants and can assist with the solubilisation and uptake of drugs through the digestion process. Human milk is the preferred diet of infants and could enable the delivery of medications to these patients. This thesis examined the potential of human milk as a delivery vehicle for poorly soluble drugs against more conventional drug delivery approaches.
