A proof of concept experiment is planned as part of the work of a new joint ISIS/RHUL facility development PhD student. Humic material will be salinized onto sapphire blocks and oxidised at the water-mineral interface using aqueous phase ozone or OH radicals. The kinetics of the reaction are critical in the assessment of the atmospheric lifetime of HUmic-Like Substances (HULIS) being cloud-processed on atmospheric mineral aerosol. Film thickness measurements will allow radiative-transfer assessment of top-of-atmosphere heating to be calculated for this cloud processing. The experiments will incorporate a new fibre-optic launched UV-Vis path through the neutron solid-liquid cell to measure the concentration of oxidant within the cell. The experiment will also provide the first experiment data for a new joint ISIS/RHUL student and a delayed NERC grant joint between ISIS and RHUL.
