CoPS3 is a quasi-two-dimensional material with the Co2+ forming a honeycomb structure in crystallographic planes that are weakly bound by van der Waals forces. It is similar to graphite in this regard although, unlike graphite, it is magnetic, and hence it is of great interest to the graphene community. Theory calculations predict that this type of compound may host exotic physics, including dimerized magnetism and Kitaev-Heisenberg physics. We wish to study the spin dynamics of CoPS3 to determine whether this is the case. We have preliminary data from three-axis spectrometry that is complicated by the presence of a strong phonon contribution, and now wish to make use of the large detector coverage of either MERLIN or MAPS to help account for the phonon contamination.
