资源简介:
This collection comprises images from a buildings recording by BAM Mott MacDonald Joint Venture at the Port of Boston, Lincolnshire as part of the Boston Barriers Tidal Scheme. The buildings recording comprises three parts: The Wet Dock Lock, a grain hoist, and a Type FW/3/23 Pillbox.
The Wet Dock Lock was found to provide archaeological interest in its surviving historic fabric; architectural interest from the design of the Wet Dock Lock; and historic interest from the lock's association with the development of the Port of Boston. The Wet Dock Lock also had group value with the Wet Dock, which formed a crucial part of its surroundings, and which contributed to the understanding of the function and significance of the lock.
The site was surveyed on multiple dates in 2014, 2015 and 2017, during which multiple photographs were taken which provided a comprehensive photographic record of the Right Bank Grain Hoist. The photographic record illustrated the Right Bank Grain Hoist, individual item of interest, and the relationship to its setting within the Port of Boston. The Grain Hoist was situated on the right bank of The Haven, the tidal stretch of the River Witham at Boston. It first appeared on historic mapping in 1967 and enabled grain and other crops to be lifted onto boats and exported from Boston.
The Type FW3/23 pillbox, located on the Wet Dock Knuckle at the Port of Boston, was most likely constructed between 1940 and 1941, and comprised of a single storey, two chamber concrete pillbox.
The significance of the building was considered to derive from its historic interest. The building was representative of the early World War II defences which were thrown up rapidly across the country, due to the perceived threat of invasion. The very nature of the need for such defences meant that these types of structures were kept very simple and without architectural pretensions. The presence of the pillbox indicates the significance of the Port of Boston and increases our understanding of the Boston/port defensive node and its part within the Defence Area 35 Freiston Shore coastal defences.
