Using high-resolution imaging and computational analysis, this study shows that cephalopod chromatophores are controlled by multiple motor neurons forming overlapping, spatially organized units across and within chromatophores. Rather than acting as single uniform pixels, chromatophores consist of smaller controllable domains, enabling highly flexible and coordinated camouflage patterns.
