Migration motives of immigrants of foreign nationality (from 01-01-2015)

The migration motive of the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) of the Ministry of Security and Justice and the derived migration target, derived from the actual recorded behavior of the immigrant from information in the System of Social Statistical Files. At the IND, only one motive is recorded per migration movement. There are 13 different motives. For the derived migration targets, multiple targets can occur at the same time. The following derived objectives are distinguished: — family migration; — labour migration; — asylum migration; — study migration. For the establishment of the derived purposes, see the separate descriptions of the variables concerned, including asylum, family, work and study. If none of the derived migration targets occur, an immigrant is automatically typed as & not to classify ' or 'unknown '. There is no category other/unknown and/or not applicable. Source: Information about the motive of non-Dutch immigrants to come to the Netherlands comes from data from the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) of the Ministry of Security and Justice. Until 2003 this information was taken from the Central Register of Foreigners (CRV) of the IND, a registration with data on all non-Dutch nationals residing in the Netherlands. As of 2004, the data were derived from INDIS, the information system of the IND.
