The Eurobarometer contains the following major questions:
1. General satisfaction
2. Equal rights for men and women
3. Attitude to smoking
4. Cancer
5. Attitude to agriculture and judgement on European agricultural
policy
6. Attitude to Europe
7. Attitude to the USA and the Soviet Union.
Topics: 1. Eligibility to vote at place of residence; general life
satisfaction and satisfaction with democracy; personal opinion leadership;
frequency of political discussions; postmaterialism; most important
indicators for the prosperity of a country; most important associations
with the European Community; frequency of discussion of social problems.
2. Judgement on the social situation of women in the country;
preferred role distribution in one´s family; politics as something for
men or for women; trust in women in selected occupations; attitude to
more women in the national parliament; knowledge of national laws on
equal treatment of men and women; knowledge about the EC department for
equal rights for men and women at work; interest in employment of
spouse; description of the type of household and reason for the
situation of the family; financial support received in raising
children.
3. Interest in health information; health-conscious nutrition; use of
cigarettes; tar content as selection criteria for cigarettes;
preference for low tar content; interest in changing one´s own smoking
habits; doing without smoking in order not to bother others; perceived
disturbance from the tobacco smoke of other persons; being together
with smokers.
4. Preferred measures to reduce the general use of tobacco and thus
the risk of cancer; general description of personal condition of
health; serious illnesses suffered up to now; most important causes of
cancer; reduced risk of cancer from healthful living; personal
participation in cancer check-ups; possibility to avoid cancer through
corresponding precautions; familiarity and assessment of the
difficulties of cancer prevention measures; cases of cancer in one´s
circle of friends and acquaintances.
5. Interest in agricultural questions; the significance of
agricultural questions for the future; sources of information about
agricultural questions; economic areas with the most significant
support by the government; judgement on subsidies; most important
problems of agriculture; attitude to agriculture as food supplier and
as area of employment; preference for large or small agriculture
companies; judgement on selected agricultural policy measures to
support agriculture; judgement on the situation of national
agriculture; preference for a national or European responsibility for
agricultural policy; positive or negative impression of the common
agricultural policy of the EC; advantages for national agriculture and
consumers from the common agricultural policy; general judgement on
food prices; judgement on the appropriateness of the agriculture budget
of one´s own country as well as of the EC; judgement on the research
support budget of the EC; attitude to export and subsidy of
agricultural products for the world market.
6. General impression of the European Parliament; intent to
participate in a European Election; attitude to strengthening the role
of the European Parliament; attitude to unification of Western Europe;
attitude to membership of the country in the EC; assessment of the
advantageousness of EC membership for the country; regret of a failure
of the European Community; most important effects of the 30-year
existence of the Common Market; feeling of being a European; most
important reason to feel proud as a European; desirable development of
the European Community in the future.
7. Judgement on the relations of the country to the USA and the Soviet
Union as well as personal attitude to these two countries; attitude to
an intensification of this relation; concern about negative political
influence of the Soviet Union or the USA on one´s own country; attitude
to stationing of American troops in Western Europe; preference for NATO
membership or leaving it; assessment of the conventional balance of
power between NATO and the Warsaw Pact.
Demography: self-assessment on a left-right continuum; attitude to
social change; party allegiance; religious denomination; marital
status; age at end of education; party preference (Sunday question);
sex; age; size of household; number and ages of children in household;
monthly household income; occupational position; company size; position
in household; occupation of head of household; city size; degree of
urbanization; region.
The following question was also posed in Belgium: language in
household.
The following question was also posed in Ireland: attitude to the
Irish language.
In Belgium, Spain and Portugal the following question was posed:
behavior at the polls in the previous national election.
Indices: cognitive and political mobility; postmaterialism; political
orientation; EC support; affected by cancer.
