Metformin is one of the most widely prescribed pharmaceuticals worldwide. This drug and one of its end products, guanylurea, are not fully metabolized by humans and cannot be completely removed through conventional water treatment procedures. Therefore, these chemicals have accumulated in the environment and have recently been identified as emergent pollutants in surface and wastewaters around the world. This study describes Pseudomonas mendocina GU isolated from a municipal water treatment plant using guanylurea as its sole nitrogen source. The genome was sequenced with 36-fold coverage and mined to identify guanylurea degradation genes.
