Readme This repository contains the computed heatwave (HW) metrics from both CESM2 model simulations and ERA5 reanalysis. The analyses focus on the hottest three consecutive months at each grid point, determined from the long-term climatology of monthly near-surface temperature (CRU v4.08). The computed metrics is for three heatwaves types: compound (c), daytime (d), and nighttime (n), and metrics: frequency (freq), duration (dur), and intensity (int). Folder Structure 1. HW_metrics_CESM2 Contains the CESM2 computed heatwave metrics. Files are organized as: HW_metrics_CESM2/heatwave_type/period/metrics_type_period.zzz.nnn.nc period: hist (historical -1950-1979); recent (1985-2014) zzz — forcing: If a 4-digit number, it refers to the initialization in the all_forcing experiment. Otherwise, it refers to the specific forcing:* AAER: anthropogenic aerosols* BMB: biomass burning* GHG: greenhouse gases* EE: everything else nnn — ensemble member number 2. HW_metrics_ERA5 Contains the ERA5 computed heatwave metrics. Additionally, there is a subfolder: ERA5_hottest_month_min_max_temp Contains ERA5 daily minimum and maximum temperature data filtered for the hottest three months (used to compute HW metrics). 3. Hottest Months hottest_months_cru.nc Contains the actual hottest three months for each grid point based on the long-term climatology (1965–2014) from CRU v4.08 monthly near-surface temperature. Note: All other analyses presented in the manuscript (e.g., the mechanisms) are based on the primary downloads of the CESM2-LE simulations, but were filtered using 'hottest_months_cru.nc' before plotting.
