VPRS 11863 Consolidated Name Index to Register of Crown Grants

This series is a consolidated name index to Crown grants for land sold by public auction prior to 1852. The index provides references to books 1 to 19 of the Register of Crown Grants. However, only books 14 to 19 which record land sales in the Port Phillip District between 1838 and 1851 were transferred to the Public Record Office and the location of the earlier volumes is unknown. It is possible that the registers documenting sales in the Port Phillip District were withdrawn from the original series when Victoria separated from New South Wales in 1851 and registers 1 to 13 may have been retained in NSW.It is uncertain when the consolidated index was compiled. It is possible that the index is a copy of an original NSW record made for reference purposes following Separation. The index provides access to entries in registers covering the years 1838 to 1851. The series date range has therefore been inferred as 1851.The Name Index to the Register of Crown Grants provides a complete listing of Crown Grantees for the years to 1851 and gives the book and page number references to the Register of Crown Grants in which the details of the sales are recorded. Entries were made in alphabetical order by name of Grantee.
