Genomic and morphological assessment of the status of Kuenzler's hedgehog cactus

This study examines the evolutionary status of the federally threatened cactus species Echinocereus fendleri var. kuenzleri. Analysis of morphological data indicated that this taxon is distinct from other E. fendleri varieties. Analysis of ddRAD genomic data, however, indicated that Echinocereus fendleri var. kuenzleri comprises two evolutionarily distinct lineages. This carries clear implications for the future conservation of this species.
