Geological mapping of the Beacon Supergroup at Mt Bastion, Skew Peak and Robinson Peak, South Victoria Land

The coal measure sequence in the Beacon Supergroup extends northwards from the Upper Wright Valley towards the Willett Range area (Mt Bastion/Skew Peak/Robison Peak). An area approximately 1,000km2 has been mapped in the Robinson Peak, Sponsors Peak, Mt Bastion Area at a scale of 1:50,000.The aim was to map in detail the coal bearing formations and associated formations of the Beacon Supergroup in the Mt Bastion, Robinson Peak, Skew Peak region. Coal seams cropping out in the region were sampled for subsequent laboratory analysis with a view to continue to assess the overall character of these coals and best mode of further co-ordinated assessment. Stratigraphic sections were measured in detail and described and samples were collected for petrology and palynology analysis.
