资源简介:

The Victor Street Mission Collection contains 1 folder with photographs related to the Victor Street Mission in Soulard. Included in the collection are 18 black and white photographs, primarily of groups of children. These photographs, from the heavily immigrant neighborhood known as "Bohemian Hill," include images of classes bedecked with American flags, theatrical productions, children wearing paper Easter hats in the shape of rabbits, and maypole dances.

The Victor Street Mission was operated by Markham Memorial Presbyterian Church, in a building that had formerly been St. George School, operated by Trinity Lutheran Church in Soulard. According to The immigrant in St. Louis, a study by Ruth Crawford, 1916, "A center of wide influence among the Slavic groups in St. Louis is Markham Memorial, a Presbyterian Church on Menard and Julia Streets, in the vicinity known as 'Bohemian Hill'." In 1919, the superintendent of the Victor Street Mission, Hugo Wurdack, endorsed Rev. Tzvetko Bragranoff in opening a new mission called the Near East Mission of St. Louis. This new mission was incorporated into the Victor Street Mission and dedicated to the support of all the city's immigrants.
