Random samples of 200 instances of the YOU+NP construction (e.g. 'you idiot!') and of 100 instances of MY+NP (e.g. 'my darling!') in Dutch, English and Polish from the nlTenTen14, enTenTen18 and plTenTen19 corpora respectively, analysed to support the argument that YOU+NP is strongly conventionalised for insults and thus impoliteness and the argument that this is due to the directness and distancing effect of explicit YOU.Description
