The heterogeneous molecular pathogenesis of bladder cancer and the frequent recurrence of superficial urothelial carcinoma suggest the contribution of cancer stem cells (CSCs) in their tumourgenicity. Although Identification of CSCs is ultimately needed for the success of targeted therapies, their origin and induction process are still ambiguous. Experimental evidence indicates that CSCs are not exactly akin, whereas, various subpopulations reside within a cancer mass and possess different capacity of tumorigenesis. This study investigated the relationship and clinical significance of two putative CSC markers, CD133 and CD24, and, their different phenotypes in patients with urinary bladder carcinoma.
