Geological overview map 1:200000 (GÜK200) – Simplified Geological Overlay – Main layer

The geological overview map (GÜK200) provides detailed information on the stratigraphy, petrigraphy and genesis of the geological units depicted. In the revised GÜK200, the surface geology on the mainland is shown in up to two superpositions. The low-powered, lying ground is not represented. In the marine area, only the petrography of the recent seabed is depicted, which comprises the top 20 cm of the seabed. In line with the original GÜK200 map sheets, the seabed is addressed stratigraphically as a recent seabed. The entire map area is dominated by quaternary formations, distinguishing between pleistocene and holocene deposits. The pleistocene deposits are dominated by the glacial deposits of the Elster, Saale and Vistula cold periods, with glacilimic basin sediments, mud loam of the ground moraines and glacifluviatiles, fluviatile and aeolian deposits. After the end of the icing, in the Holocene with rising sea levels, the various marine fauna areas, sediments of the transition area land/sea and on land mainly the low and high bogs dominate. Outcrops of older geological units are bound to the dynamics of the Zechstein salts in the underground and only occasionally appear in the map area, such as the well-known red sandstone cliffs of Helgoland.
