Pregnancy is accompanied by profound metabolic changes that are predisposed to glucose intolerance. Approximately one in seven pregnant women with normal glucose metabolism before conception develop gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in mid- to late-gestation. The latest evidence shows that gut microbiota alterations are implicated in the occurrence of GDM. Here, we conduct a nested case-control study to investigate the gut microbiome in pre-GDM women along with the healthy controls before the clinical diagnosis.
