Carnivorous plant Genlisea aurea possesses the smallest genome known in angiosperms. To investigate the patterns of genome miniaturization, we obtained the first de novo draft assembly of G. aurea genome. Using comparative plant genomics approach, we found that genome size reduction in G. aurea can largely be explained by the reduction in the length of non-coding regions and an extensive gene loss.
