Microbial metabolite sensor GPR43 controls severity of experimental GVHD

In this project we show that short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are detected by the G-protein-coupled receptor 43 (GPR43) in non-hematopoietic cells, which mediates the graft versus host disease (GVHD) protective effects of SCFAs in multiple models of murine GVHD. Importantly, more-severe GVHD in GPR43-/- animals was not due to known differences in their microbiota as revealed by co-housing experiments.
