Genome analysis of novel bacteriophages

E. faecalis is a part of the normal microbiome of the gastrointestinal tract but also can be an opportunistic pathogen. Vancomycin resistant E. faecalis is part of the group of vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE) that are an increasing source of health-care associated infections. VRE are often multidrug resistant and represent a significant risk to persons who are immunocompromised, post-surgical or have an in-dwelling medical device such as a shunt or catheter. These newly isolated viruses are potential sources of endolysin genes and phage therapy agents.
