Renal frailty is a silent, premorbid condition that predisposes to suffering from acute kidney disease, and results from the ineffectiveness (due to wear, pathological distortion, inhibition or occupation) of the homeostatic adaptation mechanisms of renal function. This project, as a continuation of the main line of research in our group, aims to validate in three different field test contexts, the diagnostic system we have previously generated for detecting renal frailty. The project also aims to develop treatments for renal frailty for a prophylactic intervention that prevents the development of acute kidney disease. These treatments are directed at targets encompassing key etiopathological mechanisms in the development of renal frailty, such as mitochondrial damage and the associated oxidative stress. In the diagnostic field, the project will apply the diagnostic system to identify frail patients before being subjected to three types of interventions potentially harmful to their kidneys (imaging tests with iodinated contrasts, cardiac surgery, and post-kidney transplantation). In the therapeutic field, the project will carry out a first phase of screening of a panel of mitochondrial protectors and antioxidants to select the most effective candidates, in cell culture models. And a second validation phase of the chosen candidates, in animal models that replicate the complete pathophysiological context of renal frailty.
