XMM observations of hyperluminous IRAS galaxies

We propose XMM observations of four hyperluminous IRAS galaxies with the aim ofdetecting any highly obscured quasars which plausibly power them. By probing tomuch fainter fluxes and at harder energies than our previous ROSAT upper limits,we will detect the directlytransmitted emission from any energeticallydominantAGN in these systems for obscuring columns of up to log(Nh)virgul25, almost to th^el at which the obscuration becomes completely opaque to Xray photons. Anyrealistic level of scattered AGN emission will also be detectable. We wish to confirm whether these objects are prototypes of the longsought class of type 2 quasars, a population which is thought to contribute significantly to the hard truncated!, Please see actual data for full text [truncated!, Please see actual data for full text]
