Geography of Open Source Software

This dataset reports the counts of geolocated active GitHub contributors active in 2019/2020, as of early 2021. The counts are aggregated at the national level and across various regional scopes. In addition to national-level data, we also present data at the EU NUTS2 level, covering subnational regions of Brazil, Russia, China, Japan, India, and the United States. We employed a pipeline approach to infer contributors' locations in three sequential steps: first from developers' GitHub profiles, then from their linked Twitter accounts, and finally from email suffixes (limited to country-level inference only). Our dataset reports the number of developers identified at each stage of this pipeline, including contributors whose locations were solely identified via their GitHub account details.
