The purpose of this study was to concretize different conditions that could contribute to the improvement effort of an industrial company. Traditionally, the industry focus a lot on improvements related to products and production related processes. This study identified and concretized other areas that could contribute favourably to the company's efficiency and ability to compete. This knowledge was intended to be a supplement to the existing improvement effort that has been established. The study covered teams consisting of participants with higher education, a considerable degree of specialization, and that works with complex problems and products. This study identified, analysed and documented the factors that promoted and maintained different aspects of innovation in these environments. The research method used for this project was applied research. Whether also quantitative or qualitative methods should be used was assessed during working on the project. 3 different improvement areas that could contribute to the company's improvement effort have been identified; 1. Identify the learning processes that contribute to innovation in competence intensive teams. Innovation is considered to be one of products that are generated from the interaction of people working towards a common goal. Learning occurs when people interact, and productive work occurs when the learning contributes to create solutions that can be converted into good products and processes. The ability to create innovative solutions is considered to be of decisive importance for the future of companies and their ability to compete. 2. Evaluation of the career ladder for engineers. Are administrative systems contributing as career ladders in order to optimise the choice of career path for the employees, and are these systems contributing to recruiting the right leaders for the company? 3. Conscious use of organizational slack as a contributor in order to enhance the company's innovative capacities.
