VPRS 4662 Register Of Accounts

The Central Roads Board, the first agency concerned with the establishment of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).This series lists the accounts presented for payment in each month in relation to roads or bridge projects. Major ongoing projects for which these accounts were presented were for the Mount Alexander Road, the Melbourne to Sydney Road and the Melbourne to Ballarat Road. Accounts may be partial or final payments for the execution of contracts or others related to the project. Contract payments were able to be authorised by the receipt of the Road Engineers Returns of Work Executed (seen in VPRS 4677). A number of estrays of these returns relating to the Mount Alexander Road, Gisborne Section are found in this volume.
